Summary of Works
Overall Description of Works
Set within a busy London park, the project required the careful design and installation of extensive access and protection systems, including full scaffolding to all elevations and chimney stacks together with a temporary roof supported on kentledge structures to safeguard the historic interiors during intrusive roof and façade works.
The works included a comprehensive roof refurbishment with new natural Welsh slate, Code 7 lead parapet gutters and new asphalt gutters, alongside significant structural and carpentry repairs to the parapet gutters and historic timber roof structure, with new structural steelwork introduced where required.
Extensive external fabric conservation works were undertaken, including decorative and plain render repairs using traditional hydraulic lime and Roman cement mixes, while ornate architectural features were carefully restored through the reproduction and installation of cast stone copings, cornice brackets and decorative parapet panels, together with handmade brickwork matched to the historic fabric.
Specialist paint analysis and removal were carried out using poulticing techniques and Thermatech superheated steam cleaning to safely remove lead-based coatings, before the application of breathable Keim mineral paint systems to rendered elevations and chimney stacks.
The conservation of historic joinery formed a key element of the works, including window and door repairs, timber splicing and replacement of sash components, alongside associated external improvements including new rainwater goods, a lightning protection system, fall-arrest systems, roof lanterns, patent glazing and upgrades to the underground drainage infrastructure.
