Summary of Works
Overall Description of Works
These works were undertaken at a Scheduled Monument, we were trusted by English Heritage to carry out sensitive conservation repairs, a responsibility and privilege we were proud to deliver. The project involved the installation of self-supporting scaffolding to provide safe access, together with the careful removal of vegetation from walling and cappings to prevent further deterioration of the historic fabric.
Extensive mortar analysis and the preparation of numerous mortar and material samples were undertaken to ensure that all repair works were fully compatible with the existing materials. The works included the careful dismantling and rebuilding of sections of flint walling using existing materials wherever possible, along with specialist repointing to both flint walling and dressed stone using appropriate lime-based mortars.
Additional conservation works comprised the preparation and laying of mortar hard capping to historic walkways, the discreet installation of stainless steel supports to stabilise corbelled wall sections, and the supply and installation of a substantial oak beam above the historic gateway to provide structural support to unstable flintwork walling above.
